چکیده

On what grounds can we conclude that an act of categor@tion isbiased? In this chapter. 1t is contended that in the absence of objective nomls of what categorles actually are. biases in categorizatiOn can only be specified in relation to theoreticalunderstand~s of categorization. Therefore. the chapter startswith an overview of current theoretical positions regarding categorization. and the various constraints on learning and using categories that are specified by these theories. Several types of categorization bias follow from these descriptions. In this conteXt. the role of prototypes, basic level categories. existing schemata, category width. conteXt. feature frequency and correlation among features is discussed. as weIl as the bias~ influence of selective attention. hypothesis test~ and task demands.

Discovering Inductive Biases in Categorization through Iterated Learning

Progress in studying human categorization has typically involved comparing generalization judgments made by people to those made by models for a variety of training conditions. In this paper, we explore an alternative method for understanding human category learning—iterated learning—which can directly expose the inductive biases of human learners and categorization models. Using a variety of s...

Introducing Biases in Document Clustering

In this paper, we present three criteria for introducing biases in document clustering algorithms, when information characterizing the document collections is available. We focus on collections known to be the result of a document categorization or sample-based document filtering process. Our proposals rely on profiles, i.e., document samples known to have been used for obtaining the collection...

The development of feature spaces for similarity and categorization

Similarity and categorization are usually formulated as operations over a set of available features at time t of conceptual development. In this paper, we discuss possible constraints on the development of the feature space such as the history of categorization, perceptual biases in the selection and the construction of features, and the role of higherlevel knowledge and beliefs. The history of...

Racial ingroup and outgroup attention biases revealed by event-related brain potentials.

Recent electrophysiological research indicates that perceivers differentiate others on the basis of race extremely quickly. However, most categorization studies have been limited to White participants, neglecting potential differences in processing between racial groups. Moreover, the extent to which race interferes with categorization along other dimensions when race is made irrelevant to a pe...
